Knee Conditions Considered for PRP in Glasgow
Knee osteoarthritis
Clinical studies suggest that some patients with mild to moderate arthritis may experience improvements in pain and mobility following PRP injection. Individual responses vary, and the treatment is not suitable for all patients.
Degenerative meniscal changes
PRP may be considered in selected patients where early meniscal degeneration has not responded to conservative measures.
Patellar tendinopathy
There is clinical evidence supporting the use of PRP for persistent tendon pain at the front of the knee in patients who have not responded adequately to physiotherapy.
Suitability is assessed individually. Dr Azhar will advise on whether PRP is the most appropriate treatment for each patient following clinical assessment.
About PRP for Knee Conditions
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses a preparation concentrated from the patient’s own blood and delivered by injection into the affected area of the knee. The platelet fraction of blood contains growth factors that are involved in tissue repair. When introduced into a damaged joint, PRP may support the body’s natural healing processes. All injections at the Glasgow clinic are administered under real-time ultrasound guidance by Dr Azhar.
Clinical studies have reported improvements in pain and function following PRP injection in patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. The strength and duration of the response vary between individuals, and PRP does not reverse established cartilage loss. Dr Azhar will discuss whether the treatment is appropriate for each patient’s specific diagnosis and circumstances at the initial consultation.
The Procedure at Our Glasgow Clinic
- A blood sample is taken from the patient’s arm at the start of the appointment.
- The sample is centrifuged to separate and concentrate the platelet fraction, a process that takes approximately 15 minutes.
- The concentrated PRP is prepared in a sterile syringe.
- The knee is cleaned and Dr Azhar uses an ultrasound probe to identify the target area and guide the injection to the correct position within the joint.
The appointment typically takes around 45 to 60 minutes. Most patients are able to return to light activity the same day. Some mild discomfort around the knee is a normal short-term response to the injection.
What Patients in Glasgow Can Expect
Dr Azhar provides an honest and thorough clinical assessment of each patient's suitability for PRP and sets realistic expectations about what the treatment may achieve. Response to PRP varies between individuals. In published clinical studies, a proportion of patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis have reported meaningful improvements in pain and mobility over the weeks and months following treatment. Some patients do not respond significantly, and Dr Azhar will discuss this openly at the consultation.

Certain medications, including anti-inflammatory drugs and anticoagulants, may need to be reviewed before the procedure. Dr Azhar will discuss your current medications at the initial consultation and advise accordingly.
Because PRP is prepared from the patient’s own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is very low. As with any injection, there is a small risk of minor bruising, temporary discomfort and, rarely, local infection. These risks will be discussed in full at the consultation.
